Good Good Students

It doesn't happen that often, but every once in a while I'll hear a new student say "I'm not good enough" or "I'm not fit enough". Eventually, this line of logic will have someone asking the question, "Should I continue being a student if I'm not good at Muay Thai"?

Here is the truth, there’s a GIANT difference between being good at Muay Thai and being a good Muay Thai Student.

Being good at Muay Thai is cool, but it’s just an attribute that comes from being a good student. Meaning : Being good at Muay Thai is an intangible destination and being a good student is the journey that will put you on the correct path.

I’ll phrase that in a different way : a good student has the courage, discipline and devotion to keep up with the years of practice, hard work, millions of push-ups and numerous other indescribable hardships that will yield a better muay thai fighter – but Muay Thai is just one aspect of our lives. Isn’t the goal to be a better person and make a positive impact on the world? The lessons we learn in the gym, as good students, translate to EVERYTHING we do in AND out side of the gym.

I, Coach Charlie, can honestly say; I don’t care “how good” someone is at Muay Thai, right now. Because, every time we get on the mats, we can incrementally improve, ONLY IF we are good students. Being good at Muay Thai means just that, you’re good at Muay Thai. Good Muay Thai students goes on to be more than “good muay thai fighters”… they are our community leader, mentors and future instructors at VIII Limbs.

So, if you feel like you’re not good at Muay Thai… ask yourself a few questions:

  • Am I a good Muay Thai Student?
  • Do I listen to my coaches?
  • Do I make an effort  to improve where my coaches  tell me I need improvement?
  • Do I put forth effort every time I’m in the gym?
  • Do I take advantage of every moment while I’m at VIII Limbs”?
  • Am I nice to people?
  • Do I add to the positive vibe while training?

If the answer is yes, then breath easy – you don’t have to worry about being good at Muay Thai right now. All you should care about is being a good student, because in the long run, that’s what will take you further in life.
